Fifteen students from Singapore just returned from Taiwan, where the Second ASIA INTERNATIONAL MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD (AIMO) 2013 was held with 11 participating countries – China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. Singapore won 2 Golds, 2 Silvers, 6 Bronzes and 5 Merit Awards.
Two MOE teachers from First Toa Payoh Primary School, Ms Teo Chwee Chin and Henderson Secondary School, Ms Yvonne Lee Hwee Choo, along with 3 officials from Singapore and ASEAN Schools Math Olympiads (SASMO) and 20 parents, joined this trip, bringing our total group to 44 people.
The contest was held on Sunday, July 28, 2013 from 10 am to noon at the National Taiwan University. There were 7 different levels of contests from Grades 3 to 9 and students had 2 hours to complete 30 questions in 3 parts.
Part A – 12 questions x 3 marks = 36 marks
Part B – 10 questions x 5 marks = 50 marks
Part C – 8 questions x 8 marks = 64 marks
Total = 150 marks
Awards available were: Star of Asia (Top candidate from each Country), Asian Champion for each grade, Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards. Merit awards were given to all non-medalists as they had already at least a Bronze medal in the first round of the qualifying contests.
The prize giving ceremony was held at Kaohsiung’s National Sun Yatsen University on July 30.
