Math Contest scene in Singapore

There are many mathematics contests (math olympiads) in Singapore which your child can participate, starting from Primary 1.  The earlier you start, the easier it is and it also helps them to prepare for contests like SASMO, NMOS, Mathlympics, RIPMWC, SMOPS and SMO. Below you will find the list of math contests in Singapore.



Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO)

Eligibility: SASMO is open to all Primary 2 to 6 and Secondary 1 to 4 students. Each level has a differentiated paper and contains 25 questions.

Difficulty level: SASMO is a math contest that stretches not only the brightest students, but is aimed at instilling confidence for all students.

Contest Date: The contest is usually held in early April every year.

Singapore Math Kangaroo Contest (SMKC)

Eligibility: SMKC is open to all Primary 1 to 6, Secondary 1 to 4 and JC students.

Difficulty level: SMKC is different from the other math competitions such as math Olympiad. Its syllabus is less advanced that other Olympiad competitions, and students can compete without any special training or advanced knowledge.

National Mathematics Olympiad of Singapore (NMOS)

The National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore (NMOS) is an annual national competition organized by the NUS High School of Mathematics and Science since 2006

Eligibility: It is open for Primary 4 and 5 students from local schools. Only school teachers can register students for the contest. No individual registration is allowed.

Difficulty level: Primary 4 and 5 students sit for the same paper and are ranked together. The level of difficulty of the competition is pitched at primary 5 level and above. Generally, in order to win an Award, the students need to have at least one year of Math Olympiad Training.

Mathlympics

The Annual Mathlympics for all Singapore Primary Schools is jointly organised by Anglo-Chinese School (Independent), Learners’ Connections Pte Ltd and Casio (Singapore) Pte Ltd.

Eligibility: It is open for Primary 4 and 5 students from local schools. Only school teachers can register students for the contest. No individual registration is allowed.

Difficulty level: Primary 4 and 5 students sit for the same paper and ranked together. The level of difficulty of the competition is pitched at primary 5 level and above. Generally, in order to win an Award, the students need to have at least one year of Math Olympiad Training.

Raffles Institution Primary Mathematics World Contest (RIPMWC)

RIPMWC is jointly organised by Raffles Institution and HeyMath.
Eligibility:

Junior Category: It is open for Primary 1 and 5 students from local schools.

Open Category: It is open for Primary 6 students from local schools.  Only school teachers can register students for the contest. No individual registration is allowed.

Difficulty level: It is the most difficult Math Contest in Primary Schools. The level of difficulty of the competition is pitched at primary 6 level and above. Primary 1 to 6 students sit for the same paper and ranked together in the respective categories mentioned above.  Generally, students who won Gold and Silver award in NMOS and Mathlympics have the clear advantage to win an Award.

 Singapore Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (SMOPS)

SMOPS is organised by Hwa Chong Institution.

Eligibility: It is open for Primary 6 students from local schools. Only school teachers can register students for the contest. No individual registration is allowed.

Difficulty level: It is second most difficult Math Contest in Primary Schools. The level of difficulty of the competition is pitched at primary 6 level and above. Generally, students who won Gold and Silver award in NMOS and Mathlympics have the clear advantage to win an Award.

Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) in Singapore

AMC is organized by the Australian Mathematics Trust (AMT). It is one of the internationally recognized math contests.

Eligibility: It is open for Primary 3 to JC students from local schools. Only school teachers can register students for the contest. No individual registration is allowed.

Difficulty level: AMC aims to be accessible to all students, not just the mathematically gifted. Generally, students with strong Math background.

Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO)

SMO is the largest and oldest math competition in Singapore. It is open to secondary students. Winners will have the opportunity to be selected for International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

Eligibility: It is open for Primary 6 to Secondary 4 students from local schools.

Difficulty level: SMO is the most difficult and the most prestigious Maths Olympiad in Singapore.
